WEST SIDE STORY

The West Side Story (WSS) is Iowa City West High School’s award-winning, student-run publication that covers subjects of interest to West High and the Iowa City community. I served as an Editorials Editor, Copy Editor, and Reporter. During my time at WSS, I won multiple state awards, joined the LA Times High School Insider Student Advisory Board, and witnessed the publication of my works in other newspapers and organizations. More of my work can be found here.

The Miracle Season | Print Layout

Published on April 16, 2018

Hollywood has come to Iowa City, turning a hometown miracle into a nationwide inspiration. West High’s volleyball team fresh off a recent championship loses their star player and team captain Caroline Found in a moped accident. Her teammates and loved ones are faced with insurmountable grief, just as father Ernie Found deals with the loss of his daughter Caroline and his wife Ellyn, who passes away a week after Caroline’s funeral due to end-stage cancer. However, under the leadership of former coach Kathy Bresnahan, the team would overcome all odds to win yet another state championship against rival City High.

Bresnahan would eventually write a book, titled “The Miracle Season.” It would be picked up by LD Entertainment and transformed into a movie. I covered the author’s book signing and the hometown movie premiere. At the signing, I interviewed three strangers on the spot and discovered that all three had children who were on Found’s team!
